Bedroom furniture, sometimes called a bedroom set or bedroom suite consists of a group of furniture in a bedroom or sleeping quarters. Pieces of furniture referred to as bedroom furniture usually include: beds, wardrobes, dressers, chests, nightstands, armoires, vanities, trunks, and mirrors. There are also many variations of these pieces as furniture styles have changed through time and as individual manufacturers have put their own spin on them.

Bedroom furniture is predominantly made of wood, but many bed frames are made of various metals as well. Bed frames include but are not limited to bed rails, foot-boards and head-boards. Foot-boards and head-boards are usually made up of a few materials including wood, leather, paint & other various fabrics. Steel or iron is usually used for bed rails.

Bed frames are most commonly built with support for a head-board (sometimes the foot-board as well). Knock down fittings are usually used for locking in the bed rails and frames to the bed posts. Knock down fittings are very easy to take apart. A few types of knock down fittings include:

One of the common traits of quality bedroom furniture is drawers fashioned together using a method called dovetailing or English dovetailing. This method involves the interlocking of two pieces of wood, usually at a right angle.

More modern methods make use of materials such as MDF (medium density fiberboard) finished with a covering that mimics exotic and rare timbers. Man made materials such as these are often described as "The saviours of the rain forests" as they satisfy a need for quality and beauty without using the planet's valuable resources.

Bed sizes

Bed sizes vary considerably around the world, with most countries having their own standards and terminology. While the "double" size appears to be standard among English speaking countries, based on the imperial measurement of 4 ft 6 in by 6 ft 3 in (137 cm x 190 cm), the sizes for other bed types tend to vary. The mainland European sizes differ, not merely because of the use of the metric system.[9]

In the mid-1950s, the United States bedding industry introduced a new size: the king size.[10] A king-sized bed differs from the other sizes in implementation, as it is not common to have a king-sized box spring; rather, two smaller box-springs are used under a king-sized mattress. It is a common misconception that in a US "standard" or "Eastern king", the box springs are identical in size to a "twin extra-long"; however, "twin extra-long" mattresses next to each other add up to 78 inches (200 cm) wide instead of the 76 inches (190 cm) width that is standard for an "eastern king". Another size variant in the United States is the "California king", which measures 72 by 84 inches (180 cm × 210 cm) long (narrower but longer than the standard king).

What is referred to as a "single bed" in many parts of the world may also be known in US terminology as a "twin bed." In some countries, a "twin bed" may also be used to describe one of two single beds in the same room. As another example, in some cultures, the "full mattress" is referred to as a "master size bed."

When a mattress is available in fixed size (for example, twin or queen), and the description does not specify the exact size, this table may be used.

A piece of antique furniture is a collectible interior furnishing of considerable age. Often the age, rarity, condition, utility, or other unique features make a piece of furniture desirable as a collectors' item, and thus termed an antique. The antique furniture pieces reflect the style and features of the time they were made; this can be called the antique's "period" (Eduardian, Tudor, Colonial, etc.).

Antique furniture may support the human body (such as seating or beds), provide storage, or hold objects on horizontal surfaces above the ground. Storage furniture (which often makes use of doors, drawers, and shelves) is used to hold or contain smaller objects such as clothes, tools, books, and household goods. Furniture can be a product of artistic design and is considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture's functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. Domestic furniture works to create, in conjunction with furnishings such as clocks and lighting, comfortable and convenient interior spaces. Furniture can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood. Cabinetry and cabinet making are terms for the skill set used in the building of furniture.

The earliest furniture was simple and practical, but as furniture became crafted and decorated it became an early status symbol. Wealthy homeowners demanded that their furnishings reflect their status and lifestyles.

Animal furniture

Animal furniture refers both to furniture used by animals and to furniture made from animals.

Furniture for animals

Furniture designed for use by animals became a popular trend in the early 21st century.[1] Typical pieces include pet beds,[2] doghouses, hammocks, dog coolers, cat trees and extravagant play equipment.[3][4] In 2008, James Stephenson and Jason R. Rich cited high-end furniture for cats and dogs as one of the best categories of products to buy and sell for big profits.[5] Home-crafted furniture for pets has also become popular.[6]

Furniture made from animals

Animal furniture also refers to furniture made from animals. Such furniture became popular during the Victorian era. In 1896, William G. Fitzgerald wrote an article titled "Animal Furniture" in The Strand Magazine. The article included a photographic gallery of unusual pieces from the era, including a liquor stand made from an elephant's foot, a door stop made from an ostrich foot, a candelabra made from a monkey, lamps made from a black swan, an emu, monkeys, and a black bear, a chair made from a baby giraffe (with neck and head rising from the back, a porter's chair made out of a baby elephant, and a "tiger chair" with the seat covered in the animal's skin, the tail coiled around the edge, and "the head and paws ... arranged so as to give the impression that the terrible animal is about to spring."[7] In a 1907 book on big game hunting in Ceylon, Harry Storey described his practices of making furniture out of elephant parts:

"Of trophies to be secured from our elephants the feet rank first . . . They make fine footstools, liquor stands, or, if cut long in the leg, umbrella stands.

In his book, "Empire and the Animal Body," John Miller wrote that the animal furniture made from exotic animals from throughout the British Empire became "hyperbolically domesticated metropolitan accessories that testify to imperial power through their extraordinary, and sometimes comic, ingenuity.

Victorian furniture made from animals is sometimes referred to as "Wardian furniture," derived from the name of the noted taxidermist, Rowland Ward. One author noted:

"As a result of the work of Rowland Ward, there was a craze in the Victorian era for furniture and other decorative items made from the parts of animals. His were so popular that he got the unofficial naming rights: 'Wardian furniture' was the name generally given to any such object ..."

Coffee table

A coffee table is a style of long, low table which is designed to be placed in front of (or next to) a sofa or upholstered chairs to support beverages (hence the name), magazines, books (especially large, illustrated coffee table books), decorative objects, and other small items to be used while sitting, such as beverage coasters. In some situations, such as during a party, plates of food may be placed on the table.

Coffee tables are usually found in the living room or sitting room. They are available in many different variations and prices vary from style to style. Coffee tables may also incorporate cabinets or drawers for storage. The most common construction of coffee tables is out of wood (though faux wood tables are increasingly common); metal, glass and leather coffee tables are also popular[4]. Typically, stainless steel or aluminum are used for metal coffee tables. The idiom "Gather round the coffee table" is derived from the furniture piece and its proclivity for encouraging conviviality and light conversation. Coffee tables were thought to initially be constructed in Renaissance England.

Modern home kitchens

A kitchen is a room or part of a room used for cooking and food preparation in a dwelling or in a commercial establishment. A modern residential kitchen is typically equipped with a stove, a sink with hot and cold running water, a refrigerator, counters and kitchen cabinets arranged according to a modular design. Many households have a microwave oven, a dishwasher and other electric appliances. The main function of a kitchen is serving as a location for storing, cooking and preparing food (and doing related tasks such as dishwashing), but it may also be used for dining, entertaining and laundry.

Commercial kitchens are found in restaurants, cafeterias, hotels, hospitals, educational and workplace facilities, army barracks, and similar establishments. موقعیت آشپزخانه در خانه

آشپزخانه باید شمالی-جنوبی یا شمالی-غربی باشد زیرا دارای هوا ی گرم است و باید درجبههٔ هوای سرد خانه باشد اگر این امکان وجود نداشته باشد باید به وسیلهٔ بالکن یا ایوان به فضای باز وصل شود همچنین آشپزخانه باید در مجاورت باغچه سبزیجات و انبارمواد غذایی باشد و به فضا ی بازی بچه‌ها و ایوان و ورودی دید داشته باشد اگر سعی شود که اشپزخانه در نزدیکی در ورودی یا پارکینک طراحی شود بهتر است.. زیرا انتقال مواد غذایی خریداری شده به آشپز خانه راحت تر است و در نهایت آشپزخانه باید به اتاق غذاخوری و پذیرایی نزدیک باشد

مثلث کار در آشپزخانه

آشپزخانه در خانه عمدتاً محل کار است شخص خانه‌دار مدت زمان زیادی را در آشپز خانه صرف تهیه غذا می‌کند از این رو چیزی که در طراحی آشپزخانه اهمیت دارد وجود تناسباتی است که باعث شود شخص خانه‌دار در زمان کار مسافت کمتری را در آشپز خانه طی کند برای همین در آشپزخانه وسایل اصلی شامل سینک ظرفشویی و یخچال و اجاق گاز در یک مثلث قرار می‌گیرد که در استانداردهای معماری محیط این مثلث باید بین دو عدد ۴٫۸۰ متر و ۶٫۰۰ متر باشد فاصله این سه وسیله باید نه آنچنان زیاد باشد که باعث رفت آمد زیاد شود و نه آنچنان کم که محدوده کاری و حرکتی را برای هر یک از آنها مخدوش کند

محل قرار گیری وسایل آشپزخانه

محل وسایل آشپزخانه باید طوری طراحی شود که شخص خانه‌دار مدت زمان کمتر را بایستد... فضای بین وسیله‌های اصلی آشپزخانه(سینک ظرفشویی و اجاق گاز و یخچال) معمولاً با کابینت پر می‌شود و برای ایجاد فضا ی بیشتر برای ذخیره مواد غذایی و... است عمق این کابینت‌ها روی زمین ۶۰ سانتی‌متر و در کابینت هوایی ۳۵سانتی‌متر است زیرا کابینت‌های هوایی میزان وزنی که تحمل می‌کند کمتر است و همچنین کابینت هوایی باید در ارتفاعی که دست انسان می‌رسد قرار گیرد که ارتفاعی درحدود ۲ متر می‌باشد. اگر قرار باشد پنجره‌ای بین فضای آشپزخانه و پذیرایی باشد این پنجره در راستای چشم انسان قرار می‌گیرد یعنی در ارتفاع ۱۵۰ سانتی‌متر. در آشپزخانه‌هایی که دو ردیف کابینت داریم فاصلهٔ این دو ردیف باید حداقل ۱٫۲متر باشد

از آنجایی که شخص خانه‌دار مدت زمان زیادی را در مقابل سینک ظرف شویی صرف می‌کند بهتر است در مقابل سینک پنجره ای رو به فضای باز باشد تا فضای دل نشینی ایجاد کند و باعث رفع خستگی فرد شود و همچنین وجود این پنجره باعث ورود نور خورشید و جریان هوا می‌شود که رطوبت اطراف سینک را از بین می‌برد این پنجره باید سانتی‌متر ۲۰ تا ۳۰ سانتی‌متر بالاتر از سینک باشد طول سینک ظرفشویی دوقلو با سطح آبکشی ۱۵۰ سانتی‌متر است بهترین ارتفاع برای سینک و گاز بین دو عدد ۸۵ سانتی‌متر و۹۲ سانتی‌متر است برای لوله کشی شیر آب سینک باید انشعابی در زیر سینک در نظر گرفته شود که برای ماشین ظرفشویی و ماشین لباس شویی استفاده می‌شود در نتیجه در صورت وجود این دو وسیله در آشپز خانه محل استقرار آنها باید در نزدیک سینک باشد

اجاق گاز که به منظور پخت‌وپز مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرد باید در دو طرف خود کابینت کافی داشته باشد و همچنین باید دارای تهویه ی مناسب باشد این تهویه باید به وسیلهٔ هود انجام گیرد هواکش این هود اگر در دیوار باشد نباید مسافت زیادی را طی کند تا به فضای باز برسد در نزدیکی گاز نباید پنجره باشد زیرا جریان هوا موجب خاموشی شعله ودر نهایت آتش‌سوزی می‌شود پهنای استاندارد گاز ۶۰ سانتی‌متر است یخچال و فریزر چون وسیله ایست که عموم افراد خانه از آن استفاده می‌کنند ترجیحاً در نزدیکی ورودی آشپزخانه قرار می‌گیرد در این رابطه به فضای لازم برای باز کردن در آنها باید توجه کرد در اطراف یخچال و فریزر باید کابینت باشد برای راحت تر برداشتن و گذاشتن وسایل پهنای یخچال استاندارد ۶۰ سانتی‌متر است

لزوم نورپردازی مناسب

در آشپزخانه‌های قدیم که مانند امروز دارای کابینت‌های ثابت و جاسازی شده و محل مشخصی برای اجاق گاز، یخچال و دیگر وسایل آشپزخانه نبودند، نورپردازی اغلب به وسیله یک چراغ آویز سقفی که در مرکز سقف آشپزخانه نصب می‌شد انجام می‌گرفت. چرا که اغلب فعالیت‌های داخل آشپزخانه (مانند آماده‌سازی مواد غذایی) بر روی میز وسط آشپزخانه انجام می‌شد. اما امروزه باید به گونه‌ای این نورپردازی صورت بگیرد تا باعث نشود که آشپز پشت به نور قرار گیرد و باعث خستگی مفرط

لزوم جریان داشتن هوا

یک آشپزخانه خوب همچنین باید به گونه‌ای طراحی شود که هوا در آن جریان داشته باشد و گرما و بوی ناشی از پخت غذا را به خارج منتقل نماید.

طرح آشپزخانه خوب

کن کرن در مقاله ی مالکان خانه های ساخته شده ( بهارهای زرد، آهیو، 1961، جلد چهارم . ص 30 ) این گونه می نویسد یک طرح آشپزخانه خوب طرحی  است که فضای لازم برای نگه داری مواد را فراهم و هم چنین قسمت ها و وسایل لازم برای آشپزی در آن فراهم و هم چنین قسمت ها و وسایل لازم برای آشپزی در آن موجود باشد. وی با برداشت از مطالعات دانشگاه کرنل قسمت ها و وسایل لازم برای آشپزی را ابزاری نظیر سینک ، اجاق ، یخچال ، مخلوط کن و محلی برای سرو غذا بیان می کند. برای نگه داری مواد و وسایل آشپزخانه بین 3.5 متر تا 4.5 متر فضا آزاد البته به غیر از فضای لازم برای جا ظرفی و اجاق ، لازم است ( کرنل کینچن ، لگن بیر ، دانشگاه کرنل ،1952) در حالی که محدودیت فضا و جا میان این قسمت های مهم و اصلی آشپزخانه اهمیت دارد اما شواهد عملی کم تری در خصوص آن ها وجود دارد. ارزیابی های و نظرات متفاوت است. حساب سرانگشتی و قاعده تجربی که ما به عنوان فرض مسلم پذیرفته ایم این است که هیچ یک از این وسایل نمی بایستی بیش از 2 یا 4 قدم یا به عبارتی فاصله ای بیش از 3  متر با هم داشته باشند

نشیمن فضای خصوصی و خودمانی خانه است، یعنی جایی که اعضای خانواده در آنجا دور هم جمع می‌شوند و به گفتگو، تماشای تلویزیون و استفاده از وسایل صوتی و تصویری و سرگرم‌کننده مطالعهٔ روزنامه یا کتاب، بازی و ... می پردازند. در این فضا معمولاً یک سری مبل راحت و میز، لوازم صوتی و تصویری و وسایل مربوط به آن، قفسه کتاب،روزنامه،عکس و یادگاری‌های خانوادگی و ... وجود دارد.

چنانچه فعالیت‌های دیگری نظیر خیاطی،اتو کشی، پذیرایی از میهمانان غیر رسمی، کار با رایانه و مانند آن نیز در این فضا صورت پذیرد، فضایی برای وسایل لازم برای این فعالیت‌ها نیز در آنجا در نظر گرفته می‌شود. یکی از مواردی که باید در طرح نشیمن خانه مد نظر قرار گیرد، فراهم ساختن شرایطی برای دور هم نشستن اعضای خانواده و تشکیل هرچه بهتر جمع خانوادگی است در نتیجه شاید بهتر باشد که در انتخاب فرم این فضا، به اشکالی که امکان نشستن حلقه مانند را به خانواده میدهد فکر کرد و از اشکالی که خیلی کشیده و بی تناسب است، پرهیز کرد. فرم هایی نظیر دایره، مربع، چند ضلعی ها، که مرکز یا کانون متمرکزی دارند، این امکان را بیشتر فراهم می‌کنند. علاوه بر انتخاب فرم مناسب برای نشیمن بهتر است که چیدمان وسایل آن نیز به شکلی باشد که آن‌ها در مسیر رفت و آمد قرار نداشته باشند و در بخش‌های دنج و گوشه‌ای قرار گیرد. در این حالت امکان دور هم نشستن یا تمرکز بیشتر فراهم می‌شود. در نظر گرفتن محور توجه جمع افراد نشسته به سوی تلویزیون، شومینه، منظره‌ای زیبا و چشم‌انداز و نظایر آن نیز از دیگر مسائلی است که باید در چیدمان وسایل نشیمن مد نظر قرار گیرد.

تلویزیون در نشیمن نباید به گونه‌ای باشد تا نوری که از پنجره به فضای داخلی نشیمن می‌تابد مانع از دید واضح و راحت آن برای تماشاگران باشد.

اگر در نشیمن، از مبل یا صندلی برای نشستن استفاده نشده و افراد روی زمین می نشینند، کف نشیمن به کفپوشی نرم و کلفت همچون فرش یا موکت ضخیم و پرزدار نیاز دارد. ضمنا در طرح تناسبات این نشیمن باید به ابعاد و اندازه‌های رایج و استاندارد فرش (6متری،9 متری، 12 متری) توجه کرد.

وجود دیوار هایی با ارتفاع مناسب برای تکیه دادن افراد نشسته روی زمین و همچنین توجه به فرم و جانمایی مناسب پنجره‌ها از دیگر مواردی است که باید در طراحی این نشیمن به آن دقت کافی داشت.

در خانه‌های سنتی برای جوابگویی به این دو نیاز، اولا از پنجره‌هایی که تا کف اتاق ادامه داشت و دیدی مناسب برای افراد نشسته روی زمین را به حیاط فراهم می ساخت و ثانیا از ساخت طاقچه‌های در ارتفاعی بالاتر از سر فرد نشسته روی زمین کمک می گرفتند.

ابعاد، اندازه و وسعت نشیمن با توجه به نوع فعالیت‌ها و مبلمان و وسایلی که در آن قرار دارد، تعیین می‌شود. علاوه بر مساحت لازم،نور کافی و داشتن دید زیبا به محوطهٔ بیرون از دیگر شرایط یک نشیمن مناسب است.

دسترسی آشپزخانه و نشیمن باید راحت باشد تا پذیرایی از میهمانان به آسانی صورت گیرد.

در صورتی که میز کار یا مطالعه در نشیمن قرار گیر باید در زاویه مناسب با پنجره باشد تا نور کافی را دریافت کند.

مبلمان نشیمن نباید در مسیر رفت و آمد، جلوی درب اتاق‌ها یا درب ورودی قرار گیرد.

بهتر است که دسترسی اتاق خواب به نشیمن راحت باشد.

مبلمان یا فضای نشستن اعضای خانواده باید به محوطه ی بیرون، یا فضایی زیبا دید داشته باشد تا نشستن را برای افراد لذت بخش تر کند.

اگر نشیمن خانه در ادغام با پذیرایی نباشد، نباید از در ورودی دید داشته باشد.

اگر حد واسط این دو فضا فضایی نیمه باز، همچون ایوان و بالکن، نیز طرح شود، ارتباط بین نشیمن و حیاط بیشتر و با مشکلات کمتری روبرو می‌شود.

نشیمن خانه باید فضایی مناسب برای دور هم جمع شدن صمیمی، گرم، خودمانی و راحت باشد و محرمیت لازم را داشته باشد. این فضا با توجه به الگوی زندگی خانواده ی ساکن در آن می‌تواند به صورت فضایی کاملاً بسته و خصوصی طرح شود، یا اینکه با درجه ی محرمیت کمتری به صورت باز و در ادغام و رابطه ی قوی با پذیرایی و غذا خوری و آشپزخانه طرح شود.[۱]

در معماری سنتی ایرانی، اتاق‌هایی بودند که نسبت به تالار اهمیت کمتری داشتند و از اتاق‌های ساده مهمتر بودند. نشیمن، محل تجمع افراد خانواده و مهمان‌های بسیار نزدیک به حساب می‌آمد این عناصر از نظر تزئینات بسیار ساده بودند.
